The overriding aim of the MSPCA is to maintain a sanctuary for the protection of injured animals and, where appropriate, find homes for such animals when they are restored to health. On average 1,600 animals a year are treated in Ard Jerkyll. In addition the Society are actively involved in seeking prosecutions for neglect and cruelty to animals. The MSPCA strives to increase public awareness of what is required to safely and successfully raise and care for an animal. The Society promotes responsible pet ownership through youth education and speaker's programmes. There is an education room in Ard Jerkyll which can be used by visiting groups to present suitable advice on how to treat both domestic and wild animals. Children, the 'pet owners of the future', are particularly targeted.
The MSPCA also operates a dog boarding facility in a separate wing of the Sanctuary.
Ard Jerkyll is an attractive visitor centre for both the local community and visiting tourists. The Ard Jerkyll ' Happy Times' Tearooms are open to the public from 10am - 5pm every day. The Tea rooms provide a varied menu, including daily specials and fresh baked food.
