Case Story - Magwitch

Maggie the Magpie is in fact a boy called Magwitch (a complex rogue character from the story ‘Great Expectations’ by Charles Dickens). Maggie is indeed a rogue, like most Magpies. But Magpies are also very likable, they are intelligent and with intelligence comes eccentricity.

Maggie has lots of funny behaviours. Like he used to collect shiny coins from visitors when he was outside in a large pen. When it was demolished to upgrade the building a large amount of money was found in his hideouts. When he is out of his pen, he will often steal the wires attaching the drink bottles for the rabbits. Indeed he will often attack you when your back is turned. Not for malice but for fun because, when he is in a good mood, he is quite tame and lets you stroke him.

Maggie is very inquisitive and likes to look around everywhere, but he never wants to leave, even when the doors are wide open he chooses to stay. Maggie has been with us a long time now, and is doing well for his age, as Magpies in the wild have about a 6 year lifespan.

Here is a famous rhyme about Magpies you may know:
“ONE FOR SORROW TWO FOR JOY
THREE FOR A GIRL FOUR FOR A BOY
FIVE FOR SILVER SIX FOR GOLD
SEVEN FOR A SECRET NEVER TO BE TOLD
EIGHT FOR A WISH NINE FOR A KISS
AND TEN FOR THE DEVIL’S OWN SELF

IT IS TRADITIONAL AND CONSIDERED LUCKY TO GREET A MAGPIE IF SPOTTED IN THE MORNING AND EVENING.
